Stage is where I belong

Behind the scenes from shoot for Salon de Ning
Last week, I got a call from my local agent that we were asked by the management of Peninsula Hotel Manila, or Manila Pen, to prepare for a possible corporate photo shoot for Salon de Ning Bar on Sunday 7PM. That Sunday came and that was yesterday. At 10AM, I got messages and missed calls because the management decided to change the schedule from 7PM to 2PM. Basically, they wanted a separate schedule for the photo shoot at 2PM and video shoot at 8PM. Woah! I made some calls to my modeling agency to beg off from the 2 final casting/workshops that I was scheduled to go to at lunchtime. Simply because I wanted to do this for Manila Pen and it was indeed a great honor for me to do something like this for the hotel.

I arrived the hotel at 2PM and was immediately ushered to the hotel room where I got made up and dressed up. Yes, they provided stylist and makeup artist for the whole thing. Although the makeup was a tad too light and simple for a shoot, I looooooved the design of my modern Filipiniana gown. It was a fully-sequined gown that had a pop-sleeve on my right shoulder assymetrical to the bare shoulder on my left. It felt good and it definitely looked good on me. Shoot for Salon de Ning started. The A-list celebrity photographer Russel Wong made things easy for me and my pianist Noel Cruz. It was a wide-angled shot so my presence while singing onstage was significant. The whole shoot was a breeze, it gave us a chance to rehearse songs, too. It was done at around 5PM.

We were asked to standby for the video shoot at 8PM so Noel and I went to have an early, long dinner. We were warned that the video director is fussy about little details. Since I'm so used to working with difficult people, managers, and bosses, I knew I can handle the situation. But what happened after that was unpredictable and was uncalled for.
Behind the scenes from shoot for Salon de Ning with Russel Wong
I was again ushered to do touchup on my makeup and changed into another sexy flowy gown. The stylist asked the director for approval. To everyone's shock, director didn't want the lounge singer - that's me - to be in gown or any dress. Lounge singer in pants and blazer? That's sooo not Salon-de-Ning-y! But anyway, stylist was put into hot seat as we struggled to find an outfit that was quite the opposite with what the director wanted originally. As I was dressing up, another girl, dressed as a supposedly partying guest for the shoot, came up to the room and said she was asked by the director to be the singer instead! Uh oh! So what do I have to become now? My guess was right, they wanted me to switch places with her... I'd be one of the partying guests. But I thought... wait, I was asked to be THE singer and stage is where I should be. I didn't commit my full day schedule, canceling off another gig, just to be rejected by the director, who doesn't even know who I am, just like that. So nicely and politely, I begged off and quietly told the people in the PR Department that I'd lose my purpose being in there if I wouldn't be onstage. Anyway, I said, the director wouldn't notice losing a headcount among the partying guessts. They deeply apologized, but I said I perfectly understood their situation and that it's perfectly fine. There wasn't even a sound of bitterness in my part because I'd rather spend quality time with my family rather than sitting and waiting there in the hotel for nothing. But I did everything amiably, I was even joking with my pianist, who also lost another Sunday gig to give way to the shoot.

So my agent's wife and I went to the balcony lobby of the hotel and just made chikahan while waiting for my agent. Suddenly, we learned that there was a big news spread like wild fir, that I "walked out" from the shoot and that I was sacked by the director. But the management understood it very well, that the director has changed his "vision" for this project. They didn't have to even explain it to me because, being a professional model, I know this industry. However, they didn't like how it was done since they expected me, a real singer and a real representative of Salon de Ning's entertainment, to be up there onstage, singing for the video shoot of Salon de Ning. I felt bad, not because of me getting sacked, but because I didn't expect them to think that I walked out from the shoot, and I thought that with me silently slipping away from the scene, it would be less noticeable. Quite the opposite happened. It created chaos and I had people from the hotel unexpectedly apologizing to me.

I would like to apologize to the management of Peninsula Hotel Manila for the whole thing. I would have loved to the a part of it but we all know that it wasn't my decision. Of course, I wholeheartedly and humbly accept and appreciate their apologies, too, since I missed couple of my final castings and a Sunday gig - to give way to the photo and video shoots. On the brighter side, I always learn from these experiences. I love the people at Manila Pen. I love Salon de Ning and its staff. I was glad to be a part of the fun photoshoot with Russel Wong. But I guess, I was more glad to make a stand for the rest of the musicians and singers... that we don't blend well with the crowd because the STAGE IS WHERE WE BELONG... nowhere else. Peace out! :-)

PS: Catch me every Monday for my happy hour set at Salon de Ning from 7:30PM to 9:30PM.

Through The Lens of Jay Ismail

I first met Jay Ismail online through one of the modeling sites I usually frequent to where one can be connected to different creative people in the fashion, photography, and modeling industry. His sophisticated approach that goes into intricate details made me fall with his photography. Then 2010 came, and finally, we had a chance to work together. And I was able to finally meet and know more about this talented photographer from Malaysia. It was really fun working with him. And we've been very good friends since then.

When we had a quick trip to KL last June, he's one of the few people we had met up. Of course, we met up in his studio where Marl asked him thousand-and-one questions about shooting billboard (in preparation for Marl's billboard shoot with Ara Mina). This guy shoots billboards for some known brands like Ed Hardy. And of course, we had a very quick shoot again. I just love shooting with him because I KNOW that he'll do a great job with it. :)

Yesterday, he tweeted me at around 3-4AM and sent a BBM to Marl, too. He said that he woke up in a middle of a good sleep because he dreamed of something weird... that he was visiting a zoo with Marl, Selena, and me. The weirdest part of that was... he was speaking Tagalog fluently. Hahaha! So he wasn't able to go back to sleep and played with some of my old photos in his archive. And damn!!! They turned out really great and really portfolio-worthy! I totally love his work!!! Thank you, bro!

Visit his website at www.jayismail.com to view some of his great shots. But, tell me, what do you think about these shots? Leave a comment below or tweet me! :)

I love being infront of the camera, strutting my stuff infront of a lens. But I also love being behind the lens and being the one behind a great production, video, or photoshoot. Lately, we've been working with some foreign models here in Beijing. While Marl is the photographer, I found myself being the one with lots of job behind the scenes - makeup artist, hair stylist, stylist, creative director, assistant/VA or lights(wo)man, and BTS videographer. And I ain't complaining! In fact, I LOVE it! :)

Watch out for my next blogs where you will be able to see the great images of the models I have worked with. :)

With a creepy setting, it was an attempt to go darker - literally and figuratively - under the scorching heat of the midday sun, with a sprinkle of divinity and elegance... hence, I titled this set as such.

She was said to be powerful and she has been threatening to come and ruin everything. But glad that "Chedeng", the name of the supposedly super-typhoon, managed to maneuver and leave our beautiful, well-planned weekend behind. And even with the occasional rain showers, I was so excited to get it over with and told myself, the shoot must go on.

It was a rather gloomy morning but with the touch of the morning sun, our shoot went on as scheduled. I had prepared two concepts. The participants were our friends who we have worked with in the past funshoots and workshops and friends we have been in constant contact with on Twitter and Facebook. We also got another model named Denise who I have worked with in the past. I got my brother and his friend as our assistants or VA. During my second concept, it started to drizzle. We waited for it to stop and continued shooting under light drizzle, but eventually couldn't continue shooting. But thanks to Angelo Bautista, who provided the humor all throughout the day - even under the rain.

Thanks to the participants Maela Claire Simpao, Angelo Bautista, Adrian Mendoza, Joyce Chua, Angela Lauchengco, Somewell Gadiane, Billy Galang, Marlon Faller. To our other model Franchesca Denise Lagua, and other people who have been a part of our funshoot. :-)

PHOTO CONGRESS 2010 @ MEGAMALL
After our very successful funshoot at Paco Park on May 29th, we went to SM Megamall to enroll our daughter Selena at the Center for Pop Music Philippines for her voice and stage performance training. We were walking on the 5th level of the mall when we saw the Photo Congress 2010 at the Megatrade Hall so we decided to check it out.
My name sticker that says SARITA:
Assistant of Manny Librodo =)

We saw that Mr. Manny Librodo, the portraiture master, is one of the speakers in the event on Monday so I just sent him a message to let him know that we were at SM Megamall and that we would love to see him. He immediately replied us that he's at the event, too, so he asked us to come in and check out the exhibit. It was great to see him after more than half a year. And seeing his photos as part of the exhibit made me feel so proud of him. But what surprised me was seeing a photo of me in the exhibit! I was really surprised! It was a photo taken by Terry Conceja during our funshoot in Baguio City last year. Mr. Manny introduced us to the best wedding photographer in the Philippines, Mr. Lito Sy.

Since Manny's hotel is just behind the mall, we just walked him off while catching up with him with our stories. We had a great conversation with him in the lobby of his hotel before we walked back to our condo. Yes, our condo is also walking distance from Megamall. But before we went back home, Manny invited us to attend his seminar the next day after.

So on Monday, May 30, we woke up early to attend Mr. Librodo's talk at the Photo Congress 2010. We sat next to Lito Sy and his only daughter, Leann, in the front row. It was such an engaging and inspiring talk. And yes, I felt a bit shy and humbled when I knew that he included few of my photos in his presentation. I blushed when he acknowledged my presence and asked me to stand up before the crowded room. I helped him draw the winners for his exhibit photos, too. And even though he extended from his alloted time, everyone forgot their lunch and was glued to their seats and couldn't get enough of his session. Lito Sy treated us for a sumptuous lunch at Dad's along with Manny Librodo and Keda Feng. I asked him different questions and he unwillingly answered and shared his knowledge and experiences over lunch. What a "filling" lunch! :)

We went back to the seminar hall where the famous wedding videographer Jason Magbanua was having his seminar talk. I was so lucky to listen to him because I'm interested in making videos. And I was so surprised to see a long-lost friend of mine who is now a known makeup artist, Madge Lejano. And I was more surprised to know how she is related to my idol, Jason Magbanua. But ahmmm... I will stop my tongue on that topic. :-)

WPPP's AWARDS NIGHT @ IBARRA'S
Because we were with Sir Manny, we were automatically invited at the WPPP's Awards Night held at Ibarra's in Timog, Quezong City. And not only that. We were invited to sing for the event, too! Weeeee! I sang one of my personal favorites, "Somewhere Over The Rainbow". And when they called out for "more", I invited my husband Marl to sing a Miss Saigon song called "The Last Night Of The World". He later on sang another inspiring song called "You Raise Me Up". It was a great experience to sing to a room full of cameras and flashes! :-)

Marl chitchatting with Keda Feng
It was a night literally filled with BIG awards. We were seated at the VIP table and was asked not to stand and get our food from the buffet because our food will be served. TARAYYYY! :) Mr. Lito Sy bagged the Photographer of the Year 2010 among other big winners. We had a really great time! And this experience wouldn't be possible if it wasn't because of a great friend, Manny Librodo. :) THANK YOU SIR!!! =)

Colours by Badeedadee
It's been half a year that I didn't have a shoot and I certainly missed having shoots with creative and talented photographers. Hubby Badeedadee has recently edited my photo from a shoot that we did in November 2010, just before we left for Beijing. Well, at least, something new to add to my porfolio! :)

Firsts in months

During our Sunday lunch at Vantt Gallery and Cafe
Today, I have done quite a few things that I haven't done in... say, months.

Hubby and I hit the 798 Art Zone of Beijing this morning to do out photoshoot in months, or should rather be referred to as our first photoshoot in Beijing this time around. The last shoot we had was in still in Manila last November 2010. And since it was already cold when arrived in Beijing, we never dared to do the a shoot outdoors - not even indoors. This morning's shoot was actually impromptu as hubby only expressed about it last night. Time was too short to gather and buy what I need for the shoot so I just tried to dig on my suitcase here and make do with what I have in there.

Yesterday, weather forecast said it would be around 17C today. I thought, "Just nice!". But when we woke up from an hour sleep this morning , there was no sun hence a gloomy weather and worst, the temperature dropped to 4C. Too late to back out so we went on with the shoot anyway with lots of complaints from me because I would freeze every time a strong chilly wind would pass us by.

One of the firsts that I had in months, too, was having a Coke and coffee during lunch at the cozy Vantt Gallery and Cafe. And I'm quite proud of myself that I have gotten over my "addiction" with those stuff. I'm not crazy about it anymore nor do I rave about it. I guess it's a good riddance, eh?

Her World magazine August issue is OUT! Grab one now!

When I blogged about the magazine 12 hours ago, I thought it wasn't out yet. BUT IT IS! It is freaking out! :) Get your copy of Her World magazine August issue today (with Jaclyn Victor on the cover) - only in Malaysia!!! I got mine at Caltex's Star Mart next to Shangri-La Hotel. :)

One whole page of my face is on page 103 with my name on it. My freakin' age can't be denied because it's right next to my name in my quote (below) on page 102. LOL. I'm proud of my age anyway. Not all women in their 30's have achieved and done so much in life. *winks*

Thanks a lot, Her World, for this opportunity! Love love love eeeet! :)

Get a copy of Her World magazine August issue!

I was at BluInc studio today for a magazine shoot that will be out in October. And today, they showed me my beauty shot for Her World magazine August issue. It's not yet in the newstands and magazine stalls but please do get a copy when it's released because this is considered my first magazine shoot ever as a model. I won't be in the cover, the first Malaysian idol Jaclyn Victor will be. But a whole page of my face is somewhere inside - more than I had expected. Thought it's just a quarter of a page, but it's one whole page, guys!  I'd like to give more details but for the thrill of it, I won't. LOL.

So watch out for the August issue of Her World magazine... gonna be out in the next few days!!!

PS: This is just one of the great things happening soon. Another magazine will be out next month, a billboard ad, and a great show - happening this August!!!

A Day with the Master of Portraiture Manny Librodo

When I posed for the workshop of Manny Librodo, Landscape of Emotions, in Kuala Lumpur recently, I really had so much fun. The images turned out great from all the participants which clearly showed the different kind of post-processing that Manny Librodo has always been known for. But what most friends didn't know was the best things are yet to come. Because a day after the workshop, I had the very rare opportunity to spend the morning with the master of portraiture, Manny Librodo, along with the best assistants, Dr. Ban Hup Teh and my husband Marl "BadeeDadee" Cabusas, and be their only subject.

Since we performed the night before, I found it hard to get some rest. But at least, I managed to sleep for an hour. At around 7AM, my friend Reen picked us (Marl, Selena, and myself) up from the hotel and we met up with Manny and Dr. Teh at the Mines Resort. From there, we went to a very big house that is owned by Dr. Teh's friend. It was no ordinary mansion because as soon as we entered the house, we were ushered to the elevator/lift and was taken to the best part of the house... the theatre! My jaw dropped when I saw the hi-tech equipments at the engineer's booth and I couldn't believe my eyes when Manny brought me to the dressing room full of colorful costumes. Ball gowns, Chinese traditional costumes and chongsams, Japanese kimonos, masks, hats, wigs, headdresses, gloves, and all sorts of different costumes and props. And Manny was right. He knew that I'd be speechless and could only utter "Wow!" every now and then.

Manny gave me the freedom to choose what I'd like to wear for my 3 sets/wardrobe changes. He said he wanted an elegant ball gown for my first set and as suggested by Krystal the day before, I chose the purple ball gown. After doing my own makeup and hair in the dressing room, we went to the living room of the mansion and we started shooting. We also used different beautiful masks as props.

On my second set, Manny wanted an oriental Chinese opera theme again that was a bit similar to the one I wore for the workshop, with a different design and headdress. I did my makeup slightly different instead of just smearing the eyeshadow color around my eyes. We then went up to the rooftop and started shooting at the rooftop garden/patio. After the rooftop session, we went back to the theatre's dressing room to change my headdress to blue. We went to the study room where the owners love to do their Chinese paintings.

The last set was something that I haven't done before - a Japanese Kabuki theme. Doing my own Kabuki makeup was a bit of a challenge as I had to make my skin powdery white. I wore a blue Japanese kimono with a pillow at the back with matching Kabuki wig/headdress. For once, it was also a challenge for pose to be under the noontime sun at the rooftop in my oh-so-thick face, errr, makeup. LOL.

It was tiring as it was my second day of almost no-sleep at all but it was all worth it. Great bonding time and working moments with the master of portraiture, Manny Librodo, along with the other masters in their own right, Dr. Ban Hup Teh and Marl "BadeeDadee" Cabusas. It was also a great time bonding with my daughter Selena, who was my efficient assistant by the way, on her last day in town before going back to Manila. And how can I ever repay my friend Reen for being so supportive and for being the "reflectorer" that day. Thanks, Reen!

Here are some of the shots by Manny Librodo in my ball gown and mask...

And here's BadeeDadee's amazing shots, too. Be a fan of his work!

Landscape of Emotions - A Manny Librodo Workshop in Kuala Lumpur

FLASHBACK
I was very fortunate enough that my husband Marl attended Manny Librodo's workshop in Cebu. He wasn't supposed to go as he wasn't sure if we'd still be in Cebu during that 3rd week of January. But seems like the gravitational force of the universe really wanted him to attend the workshop, as of all the ones in the waiting list, he was the one who was called by the organizer when they knew that one slot was left open by another participant who backed out during the last minute. Marl was meant to be part of the workshop for sure. Before Marl left for the workshop that day, I told him to tell Manny that I would love to meet him personally. And I was so thankful that he did because Manny, who's been my contact in a modeling site, asked me to join them for dinner after their 1-day workshop. Boy, was I glad even though I was sick at that time. I was able to meet all the top photographers in Cebu who participated in the said workshop, and was fortunate enough to meet the very beautiful Kharunisia "Kharu" Jazmin and of course, the world renowned Filipino photographer, Mr. Manuel "Manny" Librodo.

A DREAM COME TRUE
Having known Manny Librodo's work for years now and having him regarded as one of Marl's inspiration in his photography, I have turned myself into a stalking fan of Librodo who would always check out his Pbase gallery and his Facebook page for his recently posted works. And there was this question in my mind, "When can I be photographed by this talented person?". And not long after that, we got a message from him few months ago that he would be having a workshop in KL. I was so excited and even suggested Marl to attend the workshop again. But it just got better. Manny asked me if I'd be willing to be one of the models for the workshop along with the Thai model cum actress Krystal Vee as the main model. And I said, "WHAAAAAAT?!?!?!?! OMG! That's insane!!! OMG! I'd definitely do it. OMG! I must do it. In this lifetime!!!". LOL.

I mean, who wouldn't want to pose for Manny Librodo? He's like the Filipino king of portraiture in ambient lighting! He's like... he's like... a dream photographer whom most models would want to shoot with. OH MY GAWWWWD! I kept staring at his message on our Facebook wall for hours in disbelief - most of my Twitter followers know that. LOL. And he asked for Marl's assistance to be his VA aka "reflectorer" which Marl was so glad to do because he'd be part of the photo session, too, and having some chance to steal some shots. :)

THE WORKSHOP
I've been looking forward to that day and was wishing nothing but for me to not fall sick when he came to KL for the workshop on June 5th. And my wish was granted as I was in my most top shape when I arrived in the workshop - except for the nasty mosquito bite under my eye right before the shoot.

There were 15 participants, a makeup artist, Manny's assistant Marl, Krystal Vee, a local model named Sofea and myself. The workshop was organized by Dr. Ban Hup Teh. They provided a costume for me which perfectly fit the Chinese Opera theme complete with the headdress. I was my own makeup artist so I matched my makeup with the costume. The photos came out outstanding!
I was supposed to only have a single set while Krystal was changing for her 2nd set, so I was so thrilled when Manny asked me if it's okay if they continue shooting me using some of the props that were available there (I also brought some). BUT OF COURSE!!! So instead of having just a set, I ended up having a scarfed look with a fake fringe for my 2nd set and a middle eastern look for the last set. It was all good and I had so much fun posing for the participants and of course, for Manny and Dr. Teh.

Marl, on the other hand, did a great job on being the VA or the 'reflectorer'. He had his chance to take some stolen shots, too. Clever guy. :) But towards the end of the workshop when I wasn't busy anymore, I replaced him as the 'reflectorer' for him to take better shots of Krystal's last set in sexy costume.

After the workshop, Dr. Teh, Krystal, Manny, Marl, and I enjoyed a delicious lunch at a Thai restaurant near Concorde Hotel Shah Alam, where they stayed during the weekend. It was great to get to know them well. They also went to the Pub to watch our show. We're soooo humbled. :)

FUN INDEED
I really had fun throughout the workshop. It was a great experience and the participants were fun to work with. Dr. Teh, the organizer, was so helpful in most ways and made sure that I got everything that I needed. Sofea, the local model, was so sweet. The beautiful Krystal was unbelievably easy-going and down-to-earth. Manny, of course, is THE man. :)

Photoshoot with Photography Buff (KLPPB)

It was a photowalk-cum-shoot co-organized by Marl and the Photography Buff group from KL Pinoy Online Community. Although it was our first time to meet the participants, it turned out to be a fun outing. It's really different when we really hang out with fellow Filipinos. Iba talaga ang Pinoy! :)

My photoshoot with a local magazine

Couple of weeks ago, I got a call from a beauty writer of a local magazine, asking me to be a model for their beauty section. Who wouldn't say 'no' to it?!?! I mean, it's a magazine shoot and it will be a good exposure for me, too. So I said 'yes' and was sent some details and arranged my photoshoot with them.

Couple of weeks later, there I was, in a studio of the biggest publisher of magazines in Malaysia. I guess being punctual really shows one's professionalism but being more than punctual adds eagerness to do the job - so I arrived 20 minutes before my call time. I had to wait for the makeup artist who was having his quick lunch. But when he arrived, he spent ample of time 'beautifying' me. He used different kinds of products on me from Benefit, YvesSaintLaurent, but mostly from Chanel.

My shoot commenced right after that and finished in less than 20 minutes I guess. LOL. Although I wasn't satisfied and believe that I could have done better, they were pleased with some of the shots. And given the fact that they know what's beautiful and appropriate, it's better to leave it to the pro's. They said it will be released in July or August. Hope it's the former so I'd still be in Malaysia to be one of the firsts to see it.

Since being on the cover of MOD magazine in the Philippines as a recording artist in 1995, I consider this my first ever magazine shoot as a model. And I am hoping that this ain't the last.

PS: Almost a month ago, my friends Imelda Caday and Terry Teo had their first magazine shoot with the magazine - in the ranch. Since it was Imelda's first professional shoot, we were there to support her. And that's when I met the people from the said magazine and how it all began. :)

Update: Photos and magazine name were removed... til the issue is released. :)
